How to Drain Your Water Heater, and Why?

Colonial Heights, VA | Water Heater ServicesIf you're like most people, you've probably never given the water heater in your Colonial Heights home much thought. Unfortunately, water heaters don't last forever. Sooner or later, you'll be forced to take that dreaded cold shower because of some mysterious issue that could likely have been prevented.

The Importance of Draining

Draining your water heater is one of the most important ways to extend its life. It ensures that minerals and other types of debris are cleaned out before they have a chance to accumulate and reduce your unit's efficiency. Sediment causes water heaters to emit popping and cracking noises that are often the first signs of a problem.

How to Drain Your Water Heater

Here are some simple instructions on how to drain your water heater:

1.) Turn off the water supply in your Colonial Heights home. Turn off the valve at the top of the unit that supplies the cold water.

2.) Turn off water heater. If the unit is gas operated, switch the thermostat to the “pilot” setting. If it's an electric unit, it should have its own circuit breaker. Cut off the power by flipping the switch in the breaker box.

Note: Electric units must be completely turned off during this procedure. If the water level drops below the level of any hot elements, they can easily burn out. Additionally, the water in any tank (gas or electric) can remain hot for several hours. It's best to allow it to sit overnight to avoid getting burned.

3.) Attach hose. Find the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and attach a garden hose to it. The other end of the hose should be directed into a floor drain or outside, where the hot water can be safely drained.

4.) Open hot water tap. Locate the nearest hot water tap and open it to allow atmospheric pressure to assist in draining the tank.

5.) Open drain valve. Slowly open the drain valve and leave open until all water has been drained. Before closing the valve, turn the cold water supply back on briefly to allow fresh water to run through the tank. Let the cold water run until it comes out clean, then turn it off.

6.) When finished, close the valve, remove the hose and turn the cold water back on. As the tank fills, water will begin coming out through the hot water tap opened earlier. When this occurs, turn it off. Then turn the gas or electricity on to the tank and check for leaks.
