“heatingoff”
It’s the middle of winter and your heating system won’t start. Yikes! What are you going to do? Before you call for in for heating service, follow the steps below. You just might be able to fix it yourself. Before you get started, turn off both the gas valve and the system breaker.

Pilot Light

“lighton”Your heating system cannot start if the pilot light is not on. Light it now and notice the flame color.

If it’s yellow, the pilot orifice is dirty. Does the pilot flame go off right after you light it? This means that the flame sensor is also dirty.

A dirty sensor will not be able to detect the flame and turn on the gas. Disassemble and clean the pilot opening and the flame sensor.

Check to See if You have Power

This may come as a surprise, but a gas furnace cannot start without electricity. The device that starts your heating system needs electricity to do its job. If the power goes out, this device will not turn on the gas valve and your heating system won’t start.

Also, take a look at the control board and check for any short circuits. Set the furnace breaker to “On” and check the power cord for breaks or tears.

Is The Thermocouple Dirty?

When the pilot light is out, the thermocouple will turn off the gas to your furnace. If it is clogged, the pilot flame won't light. If the pilot flame doesn’t touch the thermocouple switch, your system will not start. The thermocouple should be cleaned if it is dirty. Keep in mind that thermocouples wear out with time, so sooner or later you will have to buy a new one.

Thermostat Batteries

“checkthermostat”Sometimes the problem can be fixed by simply replacing the batteries.

The thermostat can’t tell the system to start if the batteries are dead.

Change the batteries in your thermostat frequently and make sure it is set to the “On” and “Heat” positions.

Is The Gas On?

Make sure that the gas valve is in the “On” position. If there is no gas to ignite the pilot, your heating system will not start. if you smell gas inside the home, exit the house immediately and call in for HVAC service and your local utility company.

This can be corrected by emptying it out, but be aware that this problem is caused by a more serious issue in the heating system that you will need address sooner or later.
